Twins are two offspring from one pregnancy. Estimates suggest there are approximately 125 million twins in the world today. Twins often have a lifelong bond that many other siblings envy. When young, twins sometimes share a private language, share bedrooms, compare secrets and of course, share birthdays. Many people believe that the relationship between twins goes deeper. Indeed, some think that twins can communicate with each other telepathically. The idea here is that the brain of one twin can send out signals to alert the other; in other words, the twins have the ability to read each other’s mind.
Dr Lynne Cherkas at King’s College London is a genetic analyst who studies twins. During her research, she noted a number of cases where twins shared an uncanny bond, experiences and even shared pain. In one case study, as one twin was caught up in a car accident, the other twin was dreaming of a red car. And in response to her detailed questionnaire, one in five identical twins reported some kind of telepathy with their twin, compared to one in ten non-identical twins.
